She cried into the soup
to wake
the heart of the world
from the disconnected stupor of
dumbing down and
digital life.
All she wanted was a conversation,
short and sweet;
someone to talk to her;
but they could not hear
through the din of traffic
and social media
and avatars
and a dopamine driven urge to succeed -
to win the most votes in a screenplay
gone flat.
She cried into the soup
to wake
the heart of the world
with new longing for
the lost light of
wonder in their eyes;
She offered her own longing
in exchange, to hydrate their
hopelessness
and again enable
Spring.
Little did she know
so much love
could flow of such despair.
Still, the loss of the senses
is endemic to flat pixelated screens;
and the loss of the senses
is a tragic thing,
that insurmountably
frays healthy boundaries and
our being able
to feel safe.
Neurodegeneration is the
toxic stepchild of
a touchless life.
Hopelessness and lack of purpose dim and dull
the vital fluids.
Isolation extinguishes
the living soul.
All she wanted was a conversation,
and the promise of remembering
when friends and neighbors met and
talked over tea.
She did not need
a finely orchestrated ritual
to lay down her grief.
She just needed you.
But you could not see - did not hear -
so far absorbed by
the promises
of the glossy screen
and forthcoming bursts
of dopamine…
So she cried into the soup
to wake
the heart of the world,
and drench the earth for Spring.

This poem speaks achingly about the ways that people voluntarily turn off life, forgetting that people need each other. Beautiful! Thank you!
